Ken, Thomas

Ken, Thomas
(1637–1711)
   Bishop, Poet and Devotional Writer.
Ken was educated at the University of Oxford. In 1679 he was appointed chaplain to Princess Mary in the Hague and in 1683 he became Chaplain to King Charles II. Despite being part of the royal household, he refused to allow Nell Gwynn, the King’s mistress, to stay in his house. The King admired his stand and in the following year he was nominated to the See of Bath and Wells. In 1685 he was summoned to minister to the King when he lay on his death-bed. With six other Bishops, in 1688, he refused to read out King james 11’s Declaration of Indulgence, as he viewed it as contrary to the doctrines of the Church of England. A man of great principle, he also refused to take the Oath of Allegiance to King William and Queen Mary in 1689 on the grounds that, by doing so, he would be breaking his oath to James. As a result, he was deprived of his bishopric. Today Ken is mainly remembered as the author of the famous hymns ‘Awake my soul, and with the sun’ and ‘Glory to Thee, my God, this night’.
